The dress is an important characteristic of all human societies. In addition to its obvious protective and warming function, the dress serves many other purposes, most of which relate to communicating our identity to others. Protection and warmth may not have been the primary goal of the dress. Many people have always lived in warm climates where clothing is not necessary to protect themselves from the elements, but they have developed forms of clothing. Modesty is another commonly cited goal for dress. Yet the definition of modesty varies considerably from place to place, and even in the same locality, over time. In Muslim cultures, for example, men and women cover most of the body in public, as do people at many other times and places. However, at other times and places, exposure to various parts of the body may not be a problem. Beauty / seduction are also important goals of the dress. Most people want to be attractive, at least in certain circumstances. But what is considered beautiful is also subject to variation. Beauty ideals also change over time within the same culture, as we will see. The status or identification with one's social group is clearly a very important objective of the dress. Through our dress, we all signal our belonging to a social group: it is true that your group is a Mayan village in Guatemala or undergraduate students in Cornell (of which, of course, there are many subgroups, including including those who profess no interest in dominant fashions). The ceremony or ritual can be the goal of certain forms of specialized clothing reserved for certain occasions or for certain people; like a wedding attire or a liturgical robe. Fashion or style is another goal that drives the dress in certain cultures. Fashion is a process by which the accepted dress form is transformed. Mass fashion as it has been qualified in industrialized societies is transformed for essentially economic reasons. Mass fashion is led by a manufacturing and distribution system that is motivated to promote frequent changes of styles, that is, frequent changes in the definition of the types of dress that are beautiful, or confer status desired or group identity. Since many of the new mass fashion ideas these days are taken from the street, even those who call themselves "anti-fashion" are under pressure to innovate if they want to wear styles that stand out of the main current.
